How does High Court Representations work?

The jurisdiction of the High Court is governed by the Senior Courts Act 1981 (SCA).

The High Court of Justice sits in the Royal Courts of Justice (RCJ) in the Strand, London, and in various regional centres (District Registries). There are over 130 District Registries serving various parts of the country. Claims involving disputes in London must be commenced in the RCJ. Other claims may be commenced in either the RCJ or the appropriate District Registry.

In the High Court, trials are conducted by High Court Judges. Interim matters are generally dealt with by Masters (in the RCJ) or district judges (in District Registries).

The High Court is divided into three divisions:

Each division deals with particular types of cases. For instance, the Chancery Division deals with land, intellectual property, and company law (amongst other matters). Queen’s Bench division deals most contract and tort claims, and the Family Division deals with matrimonial and related matters. The allocation is for convenience and reasons of expertise only.

Furthermore, within the High Court exist the specialist courts with separate practices and procedural rules. The High Court have the following specialist courts:

The Commercial Court which deals with complex matters that require specialist commercial knowledge such as banking, shipping and insurance matters.
The Companies and Insolvency Court which deals with applications under the Companies Act as well as financial and insolvency matters
The Patents Court and Intellectual Property and Enterprise Court (IPEC) which has a small claims track and a multi track which has a cap on damages of £500,000. A claim with a value higher than £500,000 will be allocated to the Patent Court which is part of the High Court or in the general Chancery Division.
Technology & Construction Court deals with matters requiring specialist technical or scientific knowledge e.g. professional negligence cases against architects, engineers or building disputes.
The Admiralty Court deals with shipping matters.
